Dream Moving is a licensed New York City moving company based in Astoria, Queens. We take furniture apart and put it back together as a standard part of every move we do in the city. In a Manhattan co-op with a narrow freight elevator, in a Greenpoint walk-up with a tight staircase landing, in a Williamsburg loft where a modular sectional cannot leave the apartment in one piece, furniture disassembly is not an optional add-on. It is the part of the job that makes everything else possible. All furniture assembly and disassembly is included in the flat rate. No per-piece fee, no hourly charge for reassembly, no separate invoice line. USDOT 3524817. MC 1244952.

Why Furniture Assembly Matters More in New York Than Anywhere Else?

In most places, furniture moves in one piece. There’s a wide front door, a clear path to the driveway, and enough space to carry almost anything assembled. New York City is not that.

A pre-war apartment in the Upper West Side has a front door clearance of 29 to 31 inches and a staircase landing that turns 90 degrees in 36 inches. A managed building in Astoria has a freight elevator that is 48 inches wide and 78 inches deep. A loft conversion in DUMBO has doorframes designed for industrial use, not a California King bed frame. The city is beautiful and the apartments are full of great furniture. Getting that furniture out, and into the next place, is the challenge.

The result is that a meaningful portion of every New York City move requires furniture to leave in parts. A bed frame. A dining table. A sectional. A partner desk. None of that is complicated once you know it’s coming. The problem is discovering it at 9 a.m. on move day when the truck is already on the street.

We plan what needs to come apart at the quote stage. For more on how staircase and doorframe clearances work in the city’s older buildings, our guide to narrow hallways and walk-ups in NYC covers the detail.

What We Assemble and Disassemble?

Every piece of furniture that needs to come apart to clear a staircase, a doorframe, or a freight elevator will come apart before the crew attempts to carry it. And every piece that came apart goes back together at the destination, to the same configuration it was in before. That is part of the move. Not a separate service with a separate booking.

Dream Moving specializes in tackling these challenges. Our professional team ensures your move is smooth and stress-free from start to finish. We provide services tailored to your needs, no matter the distance or complexity.

Bed Frames

Every bed frame we move is disassembled before it leaves the bedroom. The headboard comes off the side rails. The side rails come off the footboard. Platform frames with under-bed drawers have those removed and wrapped first. California King frames, which are the most common staircase problem in pre-war walk-ups, get broken into the smallest sections the hardware allows.

One thing worth knowing: a California King is wider than a standard King but shorter in length. In most walk-ups, the width is the problem going up the stairs, not the length. We work that out at the quote stage so there are no surprises on the day.

At the destination, the frame goes back together to the manufacturer’s specification before the crew moves on to anything else.

Dining Tables and Conference Tables

Pedestal tables separate at the base. Extension tables have leaves removed. Tables with aprons and bolt-on legs separate at each leg. Larger tables that are too wide to clear a doorframe are broken into the fewest pieces needed to get through.

Office and conference tables with cable management grommets or modesty panels have those components removed and packed separately. The cable routing is documented before anything comes off so it goes back the same way.

Dream Moving specializes in tackling these challenges. Our professional team ensures your move is smooth and stress-free from start to finish. We provide services tailored to your needs, no matter the distance or complexity.

Wardrobes, Armoires, and Large Storage Units

Most freestanding wardrobes and armoires are two-piece units: a base cabinet and a top crown. They separate at the shelf clips and carry as two pieces. Oversized storage units that span a wall come down panel by panel. Built-in shelving that can be safely detached from the wall is removed carefully and reassembled at the destination.

The older the wardrobe, the more likely it is that the hardware has been there a long time. Seized bolts, stripped connectors, and swollen wooden joints are part of the job. We deal with that without adding to the invoice.

Modular Sofas and Sectionals

Sectional sofas are the single most common disassembly job on New York City moves. A U-shaped sectional that fills a loft living room will not exit through a standard doorframe as one piece. The question is always how it connects: clip connectors, zipper connections, linking bars, and integrated modular frames each require a different approach.

We identify the connector style at the quote stage so the crew knows what they are working with before they arrive. The sections get separated, wrapped individually, and carried through the doorframe clearance. At the destination they go back together in the same configuration.

Desks, Home Office Units, and Entertainment Centers

L-shaped desks separate at the return connection. Desks with attached hutches have the hutch lifted off and wrapped separately. Entertainment units and media consoles with modular components come apart panel by panel.

Units with integrated cable management get documented before disassembly. We note which cable goes where, and the crew restores the routing at the destination. This takes ten minutes before the move and saves a lot of frustration after it.

Baby Furniture and Crib Conversions

Convertible cribs and toddler beds separate at the side rail attachments. Full-size beds converted from cribs carry the conversion rails and hardware in a labeled bag. We reassemble them in the same configuration they came apart. We do not guess at the conversion sequence. If you have the manual, it helps, but we work through it either way.

Furniture Assembly and Disassembly in NYC Neighborhoods

The reason furniture needs to come apart varies by building type across the city.

Dream Moving specializes in tackling these challenges. Our professional team ensures your move is smooth and stress-free from start to finish. We provide services tailored to your needs, no matter the distance or complexity.

In Manhattan Co-Op and Condo Buildings

Managed co-op and condo buildings in the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and Midtown have freight elevators with interior dimensions that set the maximum assembled size for anything going in or out. A 48-inch-wide freight elevator means anything wider than 48 inches assembled either takes a different route or comes apart. We confirm the freight elevator interior dimensions at the quote stage for every managed building move.

In Brooklyn Walk-Ups

Pre-war walk-up buildings in Greenpoint, Bushwick, Bay Ridge, and Park Slope have staircase landing turns that are the real constraint, not the staircase width. A piece 60 inches long can navigate a 36-inch-wide staircase if the landing allows the turn. It cannot if the ceiling above the landing is 78 inches and the piece is 72 inches standing. For more on staircase access in Brooklyn, our brownstone moving service covers those specifics.

In Loft Conversions in DUMBO and Williamsburg

Loft buildings in DUMBO and Williamsburg have wide open floor plans, which means people buy larger furniture than their doorframes can actually accommodate. A 120-inch sectional looks right in a 2,000-square-foot loft. It does not fit through a 34-inch doorframe. We look for that at the quote stage, before the crew drives over the bridge. See also our pages for DUMBO loft moves and Williamsburg loft moves.

In Bronx and Westchester Homes

Two-family homes in Riverdale, Yonkers, and across the Bronx have interior staircases between floors where the headroom on the run itself limits what can carry assembled. A California King headboard standing 60 inches tall cannot navigate a staircase with 84 inches of headroom if the pitch is steep. We walk the staircase geometry at the quote stage for every home move.

How Furniture Assembly and Disassembly Are Priced?

Assembly and disassembly are included in the flat rate for every Dream Moving job. No per-piece charge, no hourly rate for reassembly at the destination, no after-the-fact invoice for pieces that turned out to be harder than expected. The flat rate is set once from the inventory and the access plan. That is the number that appears on the invoice.

If you need furniture assembled or disassembled at a single address without a full move, we quote that separately on a flat rate based on the number of pieces and the access conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Furniture Assembly in NYC

Does furniture assembly and disassembly cost extra with Dream Moving?

No. It is included in the flat rate for every job. No per-piece charge, no hourly reassembly charge. The flat rate is set once from the inventory and the access plan, and that is what appears on the invoice.

What furniture do you disassemble for a move?

Anything that needs to come apart to get through the building. Bed frames, dining tables, wardrobes and armoires, sectional sofas, L-shaped desks with hutches, entertainment units, convertible cribs. We identify what needs to come apart at the quote stage, not on the morning of the move.

How do you make sure furniture goes back together correctly?

We label every bag of hardware with the piece it came from and the side it belongs to. We document the configuration of modular and sectional furniture before the first connector comes apart. Reassembly at the destination follows the same labeling. The crew that disassembled the piece is the crew that puts it back together.

Will you disassemble IKEA furniture?

Yes. PAX wardrobes, MALM bed frames, KALLAX shelving, HEMNES dressers, BESTA media units. IKEA furniture commonly has to come apart for a New York City move because the assembled dimensions exceed doorframe and staircase clearances. We bring the right tools. Hardware is bagged and labeled. Reassembly follows the IKEA instruction sequence.

Do you charge more for difficult pieces?

No. The flat rate includes pieces that are difficult to disassemble. A heavy armoire with seized connector bolts, a conference table with integrated cable management, an oversized entertainment center with modular panels. All part of the job at the quoted price. We do not add a surcharge on move day for pieces that turned out to be more work than expected.

Can I book furniture assembly or disassembly without a full move?

Yes. If you need furniture assembled or disassembled at a single address without a full move, we quote that as a standalone service on a flat rate. Call (212) 994-4941 or submit the quote form with the address, the pieces, and the floor number.

What is the difference between furniture disassembly and special item moving?

Furniture disassembly covers standard household pieces: bed frames, tables, sofas, wardrobes, desks. Special item moving covers pieces that require equipment, rigging, or handling beyond standard disassembly: pianos, safes, pool tables, oversized artwork, items needing custom crating. If your piece needs more than tools and technique to move, our special item movers handle that work.
