Packing services: what Dream Moving does and does not pack?
Packing is available as an add-on service on every residential and commercial job. It is quoted and invoiced separately from the move itself. Materials are included in the packing rate: there is no separate charge for boxes, tape, bubble wrap, or packing paper when professional packing is booked.
What professional packing covers?
- All rooms or specified rooms, depending on scope agreed at booking
- Double-wall boxes for fragile items: dishes, glassware, electronics, framed art
- Wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes: no folding, no wrinkles
- Custom wrap for mirrors, flat-screen TVs, and artwork: packing paper layer, bubble wrap layer, cardboard face protection
- Furniture disassembly for pieces that require it: bed frames, sectional sofas, modular shelving, dining tables
- Labeling of every box by destination room and content category
- A box inventory list by room, provided to the customer before the crew loads out
What professional packing does not cover?
- USDOT-prohibited items: propane tanks, gasoline, liquid paint, compressed gas cylinders, wet-cell batteries, explosives
- Perishable food: must be consumed, donated, or discarded before move day
- Medications and prescriptions: travel with the customer, not in the truck
- Cash, financial documents, passports, and irreplaceable personal documents: travel with the customer
- Plants: often prohibited in service elevators by NYC building management; customer arranges separately
Furniture wrapping on every job!
Whether or not professional packing is booked, every piece of furniture on every Dream Moving job is wrapped in heavy-duty moving blankets and secured with stretch wrap before it leaves the apartment. This is included in every quote. The wrap protects the furniture and protects the building: plaster walls and painted door frames in pre-war NYC buildings are damaged by unprotected furniture corners.
Transport: how loading, transit, and delivery work?
Truck sizing
Truck size is matched to job scope at the quote stage. A studio or 1-bedroom loads into a 16-foot truck. A 2-bedroom uses a 20-foot truck. A 3-bedroom or larger uses a 26-foot truck. An undersized truck requires a second trip, which doubles labor time and can push a move outside a freight elevator window. Dream Moving does not send undersized trucks.
Loading sequence
The crew loads heavy items first: appliances, dressers, bed frames, and large furniture go against the truck walls as the base layer. Boxes stack on top of and between furniture pieces, sorted by weight (heaviest on the bottom, lightest on top). Fragile boxes are loaded last and positioned against soft items. Nothing is stacked on top of fragile-labeled boxes.
Floor and wall protection
At both the origin and destination, the crew lays down floor protection runners in high-traffic areas before moving begins. Door frames receive protective padding before any furniture passes through. Elevator walls in building freight elevators are padded where required by building management. Protective setup before the first item moves prevents the wall and floor damage claims that are the most common source of post-move disputes.
NYC-specific transport logistics
Three logistics items trip up smaller or out-of-area operators in NYC. First, COI filing: the Certificate of Insurance is submitted before move day at no additional charge as soon as building requirements are confirmed. Standard turnaround is 24 to 48 business hours. COI requirements vary significantly by building type across the borough, the Queens service area page has a full breakdown of which building categories require one.
Second, freight elevator reservations: these are booked directly with the building super or management office, confirmed in writing, and built into the move schedule. Dream Moving alerts the customer if an elevator window is too short for the job scope so the window can be extended before move day.
Third, NYC DOT parking permits: applied for where required on commercial corridors and enforcement-heavy streets in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. The permit is tied to a specific block and time window and scheduled to align with the loading or unloading sequence.
Long-distance transport specifics
Interstate moves from New York are priced as binding written estimates under FMCSA regulations. The estimate is based on inventory weight, distance, packing services, and any storage-in-transit requirements. The number in the binding estimate is the number on the invoice. Dream Moving holds active FMCSA operating authority for interstate moves and carries full liability coverage plus cargo insurance. Every long-distance move is assigned a dedicated move coordinator at booking who handles NYC building paperwork and tracks delivery through to the destination. Direct service covers NYC to Florida, California, Texas, North Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Boston corridors.
Storage: how it works and when to use it?
The most efficient use of Dream Moving storage is the direct load-in: items go from the move-out address into the climate-controlled facility without an intermediate stop. When the move-in address is ready, items are delivered directly from storage. This eliminates double handling and is the standard approach for lease gaps of less than 30 days.
The facility is secured with 24/7 monitoring. Access to stored items during the storage period is available by appointment during business hours. Items are inventoried on arrival and the inventory list is provided to the customer.
Storage is priced per month with no minimum contract term. Short-term storage for a 1 to 7 day lease gap is available and priced accordingly. Commercial storage for office items during a phased buildout is quoted per cubic foot per month.
When storage makes sense
- Lease gap of 1 to 30 days between move-out and move-in dates
- Move-in address not ready on delivery day for long-distance relocations: storage-in-transit holds items at no forced delivery
- Downsizing move where the new address cannot accommodate all items from the origin
- Commercial office relocation where new space is being built out in phases
- Renovation situation where a room or floor is inaccessible at the move-in address
Specialty service lines
Small moves
The small moves service uses a 2-person crew and a cargo van or 16-foot truck depending on load size. The 2-hour minimum covers the majority of studio apartments, single-room moves, and furniture deliveries. Building COI requirements apply regardless of job size: if the building requires a COI, Dream Moving files it.
Urgent and same-day moves
Urgent moves are available across all five boroughs with the same all-inclusive rate as any scheduled job. There is no emergency surcharge. For same-day and next-day bookings, call (212) 994-4941 directly rather than using the online quote form. The urgent moves service page has availability details.
Commercial moving
Commercial jobs are scoped before booking with a written inventory of IT equipment, modular furniture, and any phased timeline requirements. After-hours and weekend scheduling is available at the same rate as weekday jobs — no weekend or after-hours premium. Commercial moving services in Queens cover LIC, Flushing, and Jamaica office relocations as the highest-volume locations.
IT equipment scope: Dream Moving packs and transports server racks, workstations, monitors, and AV equipment using custom crating and double-wall boxes with foam inserts. Cables are labeled and bagged by workstation before disconnection. Dream Moving does not provide IT reconnection services; the client’s IT team handles reconnection at the destination. This division of scope is confirmed in writing before the job begins.
Specialty items
Specialty items require non-standard equipment and crew training. The most common in NYC are pianos, pool tables with slate beds, gun safes, and large antique furniture. All are handled by the special item movers service, quoted separately from standard residential moves.
Item | Weight range | What the job requires |
|---|---|---|
Upright piano | 300 to 500 lbs | Piano board, 3-person minimum, stairwell assessment |
Baby grand piano | 500 to 700 lbs | Leg disassembly, piano skids, 4-person minimum |
Pool table (3-piece slate) | 700 to 1,000 lbs | Slate panel disassembly, re-leveling, re-felting if needed |
Gun safe or floor safe | 200 to 1,500 lbs | Rated dolly, floor protection, stairwell width check |
Large antique furniture | Variable | Custom wrap, white-glove carry, no stacking in transit |
Oversized or wall-mounted artwork | Variable | Custom crating for high-value pieces, flat carry |
Personalized moves
Personalized moves cover situations that require a modified approach: senior moves where the crew adjusts its pace to the customer, diplomatic relocations coordinated through mission security officers, and PCS military relocations requiring interstate binding estimates. See personalized moving services for the full scope.
